Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a class of noninvasive tests that assess how well your lungs function. These tests may be ordered by a medical professional: if you have symptoms of a lung condition, or if you are regularly exposed to certain substances in the environment or at work, monitor the progression of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to assess how well your lungs are working before surgery. A doctor will order one or more PFTs, also known as lung function tests, to assess how well you can breathe and how efficiently your lungs deliver oxygen to the rest of your body. If you already have a lung condition, your doctor may order this test to see how the condition is progressing or how it is responding to treatment.
