Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a type of noninvasive test that determines how well your lungs work. If you have symptoms of a lung condition, or if you are regularly exposed to certain substances in the environment or at work, a medical professional may order these tests to monitor the progression of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to assess how well your lungs are working before surgery. One or more PFTs, also known as lung function tests, will be ordered by your doctor to assess how well you can breathe and how efficiently your lungs deliver oxygen to the rest of your body. If you already have a lung condition, your doctor may order this test to see how it is progressing or how the treatment is working. PFTs can help with the diagnosis of chronic bronchitis, respiratory infections, and pulmonary fibrosis. COPD, formerly known as emphysema, is a lung condition in which the airways stretch and widen. Sarcoidosis is an infection caused by asbestos exposure that causes inflammation of the lungs, liver, lymph nodes, eyes, skin, and other organs. Scleroderma is a connective tissue disease.
