An echocardiogram is a picture of the heart created using ultrasound waves (echo). It is a noninvasive medical procedure with few side effects and no radiation. A doctor can see the following things during an echocardiogram: the size and thickness of the chambers, how the heart's valves function, the direction of blood flow through the heart, any blood clots in the heart, areas of damaged or weak cardiac muscle tissue, and problems affecting the pericardium, which is the fluid-filled sac around the heart. Echocardiography is also used by doctors to assess a person's overall heart health, particularly after a heart attack or stroke. Doctors can use echocardiograms to diagnose heart disease in adults (including weak pumping or stiffening of the heart muscle, leaky or blocked heart valves, and chamber enlargement), locate blood clots or tumors, assess heart pressure to diagnose pulmonary hypertension, identify congenital heart abnormalities in infants and young children, and monitor how well the heart is working.
